The Met Gala 2023 / BEST DRESSED LIST

The Met Gala 2023 / BEST DRESSED LIST

The hottest date on the fashion calendar, the annual Met Gala unites international A-listers for a night of outrageously artful looks. Hosted by Vogue’s Anna Wintour and held at New York’s legendary Met Museum, the glamourous affair out-does The Oscars when it comes to style statements.

Paying homage to the iconic late Chanel designer, 2023’s Met Gala theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. Throwing on their most extravagant vintage Chanel gowns – or ones inspired by Lagerfeld’s legacy - guests didn’t disappoint.

Here are some of the Met Gala 2023 best-dressed celebrities who paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld and embodied the theme of the night with aplomb.

Anne Hathaway in Versace

Evoking 90s-era Liz Hurley in the infamous safety pin dress, Anne Hathaway’s incredible look was the perfect Versace-Chanel mash-up. Her strapless long gown slashed to the thigh came designed à la Lagerfeld complete with classic Chanel codes like white tweed, pearl accents, and camellia flowers on the bust.

Camilla Morrone in Rodarte

Rising star Camilla Morrone looked radiant in a custom Rodarte gown. With a draped white lace top and billowing black velvet train, the monochromatic dress oozed class and elegance. Smokey eyes and glossy hair lent Camilla’s look a cool Gothic edge.

Rihanna in Valentino Haute Couture

Rihanna always slays at the Met, and this year was no exception - even when rocking her baby bump! Wearing an oversized white haute couture ballgown from Valentino, Riri looked incredible with a removable floral headpiece covered with giant camellias, the iconic Chanel flower.

Doja Cat as Choupette in Oscar De La Renta

While Jared Leto took Choupette inspo to extremes in a head-to-toe fluffy cat outfit, Doja Cat took inspiration from Karl’s beloved feline in a more elegant way. Wearing a custom Oscar De La Renta gown, her full-length shimmering white sequin gown came complete with cute kitten ears and a dramatic feather train.

Gisele in vintage Chanel Couture

Gisele’s killer dress certainly announced that she’s single and ready to mingle. Arriving in a shimmering Chanel couture silk and tulle dress that she wore in a 2007 editorial shoot with Lagerfeld, Gisele looked positively angelic with a giant feather wing-style cape.

Michaela Coel in Schiaparelli

Actress Michaela Coel knocked it out of the park with a show-stopping Schiaparelli gown. Dripping with gold, silver, and jewel embellishments, the nude sheer gown featured 30,000 crystals and 26,000 mixed stones. Her gold heels with sculpted toe details was pure Schiaparelli. Dua Lipa in vintage Chanel

Sporting a vintage white tweed Chanel bride ball gown from the '90s, Dua Lipa radiated polished glamour. Featuring a corseted bodice and full Cinderella-style skirt, Dua was every in the blushing bride – with her own funky twist, of course. Stealing the show, however, was Dua’s epic bling; a never-before-seen Tiffany & Co. white 100-carat diamond necklace.

Kate & Lila Moss in Fendi Couture

Most stylish mother and daughter Met Gala award goes to Kate and Lila Moss. Both wearing Fendi Couture (for whom Karl used to design), the duo looked ethereal in pastel pink. Kate’s silk and lace gown was complemented by a flowing cape, while Lila’s long feather dress was vintage and designed by Lagerfeld himself.

Lily Collins in Vera Wang

With ‘KARL’ emblazoned on Lily Collins’ black sheer train, there was nothing subtle about Vera Wang’s tribute to the late designer. Her white burlesque-style bodice with detached puffed sleeves looked amazing over the billowing black skirt. A twinkling statement diamond necklace from Cartier finished Lily’s look beautifully.

Jenna Ortega in Thom Browne

Staying true to her Wednesday self, Jenna Ortega’s Gothic-y gown by Thom Brown was a Chanel-Victoriana hybrid. Tiers of black ruffles on her corset dress and a bolero jacket were elevated by a gold and pearl chain detail. A classic Chanel-style black ribbon tie completed Jenna’s look.

Kim Kardashian in Schiaparelli

Custom-made by Schiaparelli’s creative director, Daniel Roseberry, Kim’s head-turning white dress featured row-upon-row of pearl strings - 50,000 freshwater pearls to be precise. Always one to make a statement on the Met Gala red carpet, Kim succeeded again in 2023. Her molded corset top and draped skirt were also adorned with 16,000 crystals, while her choker, earrings, and ring were made of pearls and crystals.

Naomi Campbell in vintage Chanel

Another star who eschewed a modern designer tribute in favor of classic vintage Chanel, Naomi Campbell looked like a Greek goddess in a floor-length column gown. From Chanel's spring/summer 2010 couture collection archives, the draped pink silk dress had sublime silver swirl detailing on the shoulder.
